Hamburgers for dinner sounds so ordinary, so last minute, so cheap…. Making a hamburger dinner special isn’t really that much more work though.
This involves making the buns instead of buying them. Not that store bought buns are tasteless. They can be really good, but don’t compare to fresh, home-made hamburger buns.
I found a recipe on-line that looked perfect because it didn’t call for lengthy rising of the dough. As a matter of fact, all I had to do was to mix the warm water and yeast together, stirred in oil & a little sugar, added an egg & salt and enough flour to make a nice, soft dough.
Then I just divided it into 8 pieces, shaped each into a ball, placed the balls on a greased baking sheet and let them rise, covered for 10 minutes.
The rolls were baked at 425 degrees for about 10 minutes until they were golden and that’s it.
I made cole slaw using a Bobby Flay recipe and a hamburger sauce using a “Two Dudes, One Pan” recipe (great book by the way).
Cheddar cheese was grated into Pace salsa to be eaten with tortilla chips and hamburger patties were shaped and seasoned and we were good to go.
I found a wine at Whole Foods (where I bought the ground chuck that day) that stated on the back label, “…enjoy with burgers…”. So I had to buy and try. A Vintner’s Reserve Black Ridge Zinfandel , no date, from California.
It was delicious beside the burgers–spicy with some berry flavors. Perfect for only $5.00 a bottle.
Here’s one of our finished burgers….nothing like home-made hamburgers and a glass of red wine for dinner!
