Growing food in Las Vegas

Yeah, I know ‘it’s a desert out there’, but things do grow here—with plenty of water and amended soil.

Herbs & Vegetables

Gardening in Las Vegas

On the minus side:  Most houses here are on relatively small lots, so those of us who want to grow a few fruits and vegetables are kind of limited as far as space.  Water is scarce and soil is poor.  Temperatures can go to the extremes both summer & winter.

On the plus side:  we have abundant sunshine, more of a Mediterranean climate, hardly any snow, and no hard freezes.

So a lot grows in Las Vegas…which is pretty surprising to most people.

Plum Tree in Bloom

On our small lot (less than a third of an acre with a one story house on it), I’ve been able to plant

Ttwo lemon trees,

A Bay Laurel (for fresh bay leaves to be used in cooking)

Fresh Bay Leaves

An Asian pear,

A dwarf peach tree,

An apricot tree,

A Plum tree,

A Fig Tree,

A Baby Fig

A Pomegranate tree,

A Kumquat tree,

Kumquats

An herb garden,

Lots of Mint (lemon, spearmint, peppermint, Chocolate, apple and lime)

Mint

Grapes,

A Cluster of Grapes

A mandarin orange tree,

A guava tree

And these fruits, herbs and some vegetables are all used when I cook.

So Las Vegas might be high desert, but a determined gardener can still develop a Productive Piece of Land.
