Brunching with Kerry Simon at the Palms Casino/Hotel

I’ve been reading rave reviews for the past year of the brunch at Kerry Simon and mouth-watering descriptions of the food items and the famous endless Bloody Mary bar.  Time to go to brunch.

The light filled restaurant space has soaring ceilings, wooden floors and tall glass walls that look out on the pool and cabanas.  A step past the reception desk is a glass-shelving unit filled with jars of candy.

We had to wait for a few minutes so I went to look at the Bloody Mary bar (which I was going to have).  This was located at the end of the bar.  We got to the restaurant about 1:45 and this area already looked tired.  Everything was out in the open for guests to pick through as they made their own drink and something about all those hands touching the ingredients since the opening (10 AM) changed my mind about getting one.  Even though the array of choices was stupendous—from a variety of vodkas, several juices from sweet to spicy, celery, cilantro, parsley, jalapenos, pepperoncini, horseradish, salts and spices.

So I ordered the ‘all you can drink’ Bellini or Mimosa.  And waited.  And waited.  Until I finally had to ask the pajama clad server….where is it???  The Mimosa was better than the Bellini.

Mimosa

The food stations were in one long line starting with seasoned shrimp in a big tub.  Progressing to the right was the Panini Station, then the Bagel Station, with a slab of smoked salmon laid out on the cutting board, crepes, then a juice bar with smoothies and green juice drinks.

Tub o' Shrimp

Of course the croissants, pastries etc., which were pretty picked over by the time we took a look at them.

Maren did the buffet, shrimp, sushi and a smoothie.  And she said it was all fresh and good.

Sushi

Vic ordered (off the menu) steak hash with 2 sunny side up eggs.  Cubed steak with chunks of bacon that he liked.  He also had biscuits & gravy which he said was filled with a coarse-ground homemade sausage.  He liked the flavors but not the extreme saltiness.  Somebody in the kitchen should be tasting the food before it goes out.  At least, that’s what Gordon Ramsey is always telling his chef’s on “Hell’s Kitchen”.

Biscuits n' Sausage Gravy

I ordered a smoked salmon benedict, creamy, eggy and plenty of salmon…yum.  Then I went down the entrée line and ordered one of everything.

Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict

Chicken & Waffles.  My favorite thing.  Chicken was crisp, really crisp, with a coat of mustard under the crust, which was delicious.  Waffles were a great sweet counterpoint.  I really loved this.

Fried Chicken & Waffles

BBQ pork ribs with coleslaw and a jalapeno muffin.  Pork was tender & sweet with the sauce coating.

BBQ Ribs

Pigs in a blanket.  Crispy pastry around little hot dogs.  With mustard to dip it in.  Who doesn’t like this???

We finished with Simon Kerry’s Junk Food Platter.  Cotton candy, Rice Krispies treats,  chocolate chip cookies, caramel popcorn, brownies, the classic Hostess Cup Cake and Sno Ball.   His riff on famous junk food…fun to take a bite of each and compare.

The next time I go to Brunch at Simon’s, I’ll get there earlier so I can try the buffet items.  It’s open from 10 AM to 4 PM, but by 1:45 the whole buffet was really tired and looked so ‘handled’ that I didn’t want to touch anything on the line.

So ordering off the menu was great for me, I had plenty to eat and drink and we all left mostly happy.
